Instant by Falcra

Licensing

Instant is free. Use it, teach it, build your business on it and pass it on. This page explains what you can do with each part of the Instant Framework, first in plain English and then in the licences' own terms.

Section 1

In plain English

In short

The way of working is free for anyone. The guide can be shared freely but not changed. The downloads can be changed and shared freely. Everything you build with Instant is yours.

The method

Instant itself, the way of working, is free for anyone to use, in any organisation, for any purpose, including paid work. You don't need permission, and you don't need to tell us.

The Manifesto, Guide and Practices

Copy them, print them, put them on your intranet, hand them out in workshops and quote them, including commercially. Credit Falcra and link back. Share them as they are but don't change, rename or repackage them.

The downloads

The Jira backlog, the run sheet (both the spreadsheet and the web page), the risk tier register, the Information Model, the Data Model and other artifacts are yours to adapt. Change them to fit your organisation and share your version, including commercially. Credit Falcra, link back, and say what you changed.

What you produce

The software you build, and the registers, models, backlogs and documents you fill in, belong to you. They don't need to carry any credit to Falcra.

Section 2

Can I…?

Can I…Answer
Use Instant to build software in my organisation?Yes. Free, with no permission needed.
Use Instant on paid client work, as a consultancy?Yes. The method is free for commercial use.
Print the guide, or put it on our intranet?Yes, unchanged and with the credit line.
Quote parts of the guide in my own slides, articles or training?Yes, with the credit line. Quotes must stay as written.
Write my own material about Instant?Yes. Explain it in your own words and link to the guide.
Edit the guide and share my edited version? No. The guide is shared unchanged, so there is one reference version. Write your own material instead, or adapt the downloads.
Adapt the Jira backlog, run sheet, risk tier register, Information Model or Data Model?Yes, and share your version, including commercially. Credit Falcra and say what you changed.
Change the sign-off timeline?Yes. Keep the Falcra notice in the file and mark your changes.
Translate the guide?Yes, with our written permission, so every translation is checked against the original. See section 5.
Run paid Instant training or workshops?Yes. Don't present it as official, or as run or endorsed by Falcra, unless it is.
Call my own version "Instant by Falcra"?No. That name is for Falcra's own material. Say your work is "based on the Instant Framework" instead.

This page is a plain-English summary. The licence texts linked in section 4 are what legally apply.

Section 3

Share and build on Instant

In short

Instant is published free so that it can be shared, taught and built on. Here is how to do that, and how to credit it.

  • Share the guide with your team, your leadership and your clients. Link to theinstantframework.com, or hand out the printed version.
  • Use the downloads on your next build, and share the versions you improve.
  • Teach it. Run it in workshops, training and courses, paid or free.
  • Write about it. Articles, talks and posts about how you used Instant are welcome.
  • Translate it. Ask us, and we'll approve and host your translation.

CC BY-ND 4.0: the Manifesto, Guide and Practices

  • Grant: a worldwide, royalty-free, non-exclusive, irrevocable licence to reproduce and share the material, in whole or in part, for any purpose, including commercially.
  • Attribution: credit the creator, keep the copyright and licence notices, link to the licence, and indicate the source, using the credit line in section 3.
  • NoDerivatives: you may not share adapted material. You may make adaptations for your own private use, but anything you share must be the material unchanged. Quoting an unchanged extract with attribution is reproducing, not adapting.
  • No additional restrictions: you may not apply terms or technical measures that stop others doing what the licence allows.
  • Translations: a translation is an adaptation, so it needs Falcra's written permission (section 5).

CC BY 4.0: the downloads and the run sheet

  • Grant: a worldwide, royalty-free, non-exclusive, irrevocable licence to reproduce, adapt and share the material, including commercially.
  • Attribution: credit the creator, link to the original and to the licence, and indicate whether you made changes.
  • No endorsement: nothing in the licence lets you suggest that Falcra made or endorses your version.
  • Your adaptations: you may license your own changes under terms of your choosing, provided recipients can still use the original material under CC BY 4.0.

Apache 2.0: the sign-off timeline

  • Grant: a perpetual, worldwide, royalty-free licence to use, reproduce, modify and distribute the software, including commercially, with an express patent licence from contributors.
  • Conditions: include a copy of the licence, keep the Falcra copyright and notices in the file, and mark any files you change.
  • No trademark rights: the licence doesn't grant use of Falcra's names, except to describe where the software came from.

Applying to all

  • The method: the Instant way of working, as distinct from the published text, is free for anyone to use. No licence is needed to apply it.
  • Your output: software, documents and data you create by using Instant or filling in the downloads are your own work. Falcra claims no rights in them.
  • No warranty: everything is provided as is, without warranties of any kind, as each licence sets out.
Section 5

The name, translations and contact

The name "Instant by Falcra"

"Instant by Falcra" identifies Falcra's own Instant material. Please don't use it for yours, and don't present your version, training or service as official or as Falcra's. Describing your work as "based on the Instant Framework" is welcome. "Instant" on its own is a word anyone can use.

Translations

You may translate the guide with Falcra's written permission. Ask at [Falcra contact email] with the language and who will translate it. Falcra approves each translation before it is published. An approved translation is shared under the same licence (CC BY-ND 4.0) and carries this credit: "[Language] translation by [translator] of The Instant Framework (theinstantframework.com) by Falcra (falcratechnologies.com), CC BY-ND 4.0. Approved by Falcra on [date]. The English original is the reference version."
